SEASON OPENING SPECIAL EVENT

"SOMETIMES I CRY" - Written, Directed and Performed by Stage, Film & Television Actress, SHERYL LEE RALPH

Sometimes I Cry is the one-woman show conceived and written by acclaimed, Tony-nominated actress of stage, television and film, Sheryl Lee Ralph. Also, an AIDS activist, Ms. Ralph’s Sometimes I Cry was inspired by real women’s life stories and their battles with HIV and AIDS. Sometimes I Cry creatively examines the female struggle when coping with HIV and AIDS. The chronicles of these women from diverse backgrounds and cultures are experienced as writer, performer Sheryl Lee Ralph explores through word, movement and song, just how each woman copes with her new reality. Ms. Ralph becomes each character, with every move and every gesture, breathing life into them and their stories. Also, the evening includes Adrienne Bankert of KCRA News as the Mistress of Ceremonies, local, talented vocalists, Ms. Aladrian Elmore and Mr. Bill Miller singing a medley of hits, audience participation - a talk back with Ms. Ralph, and a dessert reception is after the show.

October 10- November 9, 2008

WORLD PREMIERE

Shows: Friday & Saturdays, 8:00 pm; Sundays, 3:00 pm

Written and Directed by Lisa Lacy

As Solomon Turner's past and present collide, he fights to make sense of his life and to find its meaning and purpose. He finds worth in his young neighbor Tyler Brown, a 12 year old boy who is seeking to define himself, in a house filled with women and a neighborhood full of bullies. The father and son relationship deepens between them as each one struggles to say goodbye to all he has known and the other searches to find his place in a life that is just beginning to emerge. When adversity strikes, each must decide what it means to truly live up to one’s potential. Solomon’s Storefront is a human story about life, loss, the aging process, youth and what it meant during the 1960s, to be a Black man, growing or grown in America.

Zooman and the Sign follows the Tate family after their 12 year-old daughter is killed by a stray bullet. After their neighbors refuse to come forward with information to bring the killer to justice, Mr. Tate in his frustration hangs up an accusatory sign calling them cowards. The neighbors react with aggression. The play raises questions of how non-violent people respond to infectious violence and restrain their fury at their community and society's complacency. It urges us to ask the question "how can we prevent young men from becoming alienated and violent like Zooman's? "(Language not suitable for small children)
